Covalent bonding, Do atoms only bond in pairs?

depends on the atom. carbon can have four bonds with hydrogen making methane, CH4, etc. just take a look into organic chemistry. oxygen, carbon and hydrogen can make LOTS of bonds with other atoms like phosphorus, sulfur and nitrogen.
