How to stop a cat from scratching furniture?

I have new couches, every time i let my adult cat in she scratches them. I put her out when she does it, and its winter and cold out, especially at night, making me feel bad but I cant have her destroying my furniture. Ive bought her a scratching pole, but even with encouragement she wont use it. Ive been told she may dislike it because its a rope one and that cats prefer carpet ones. I cant spray anything on my couches to deter her, obviously, so does anyone have any advice or insight - success stories, on the topic to share??
